Spirits in Entwined Gazes
Spirits in Entwined Gazes:
A Time-Spatial Reconstruction of Huxiang Culture and Tim Yip's Neo-Oriental Aesthetics
Dates: June 28 – November 16, 2025
Location: Special Exhibition Hall 2, 1st Floor, Hunan Museum
From June 28 to November 16, the Hunan Museum, in collaboration with Tim Yip and Professor Li Jianmao from Hunan Normal University, presents the exhibition "Spirits in Entwined Gazes: A Time-Spatial Reconstruction of Huxiang Culture and Tim Yip's Neo-Oriental Aesthetics." For the first time, cultural relics and contemporary artworks are displayed together in the same space, capturing the inheritance and expression of Eastern aesthetics. Across ten progressively interconnected exhibition spaces, an innovative "cinematic epic" creative approach breaks down the boundaries of time and space. Over 160 rare cultural relics carrying the genetic code of Huxiang civilization are juxtaposed and fused with more than 120 contemporary artworks, film costumes, and props that embody Tim Yip's "Neo-Orientalism" aesthetic, recreating the "past and present lives" of the Hunan Museum's treasures.
The exhibition is skillfully divided into ten distinct zones, each meticulously designed to form a spiritual "entwined gaze" between ancient and modern times from different perspectives. Through his unique artistic expression and philosophical reflections, Tim Yip presents his distinctive insights into "historical and cultural memory," conveying his ongoing exploration of "Neo-Orientalism" aesthetics and "spiritual DNA," guiding viewers to contemplate the relationship between cultural inheritance and innovation.
The artist personally authored the preface and the descriptive texts for each space, which will help viewers gain a deeper understanding of the concepts the exhibition seeks to convey, and to more authentically engage in a dialogue with history and with themselves.
